Pruning is a natural process that occurs in our environment everyday. A simple stroll in the woods will reveal where trees and limbs have been pruned along the way by natural forces. Pruning is also needed around our homes and businesses. There are several reasons to prune your trees and shrubs.
Here's my ABC's of why pruning is necessary:
Arrangements are a great way to spruce up any room. Pruning azaleas, hydrangeas and camellias can make beautiful arrangements.
Beauty. Pruning of a plant creates beauty. Pruning helps create more blooms and balance for the plant. This can be extremely effective if done correctly and at the right time. For help on knowing when is the best time to prune individual plants, check out our pruning chart by clicking here.
Control is probably the most common reason why we prune a shrub. Pruning to control and correct the plant size by removing excessive growth can improve the overall health of the plant.
Damaged limbs can allow diseases to enter a plant. Pruning damaged limbs helps ensure the health of the plant and prevent the spreading of disease. Ever had that one dead spot in a boxwood plant? Pruning off the dead spot by removing the visible damage with pruners will allow the plant to recover from the damage done by the disease.
Extensive rejuvenation growth is a drastic approach to starting over. This involves severely pruning your plants. Many of our shrubs can handle extensive rejuvenation pruning, but some cannot.
Fresh new growth comes after pruning. New growth helps create a full and thick appearance.
