Sometimes catching a glimpse of a hummingbird or a butterfly can be just as exciting to you as when you were a child. The joy of having a beautiful display of flowers and shrubs on your property can only be enhanced when frequently visited by hummingbirds and butterflies. Hummingbirds and butterflies are naturally attracted to the same types of flowers; they love flowers that produce plenty of nectar. By planting the following perennial flowers, you won’t ever have to worry with filling up a messy feeder again. I like low maintenance. A particular shrub that is enjoyed by both hummingbirds and butterflies is aptly named the Butterfly Bush. These bushes come in a variety of colors and can even be planted in a pot if you prefer. A particular type of Butterfly Bush is the “Black Knight” which has lovely deep purple blooms. This bush will bloom through mid summer to late fall. Another favorite is the Red Penstemon flower. This flower will bloom from late spring to early summer and reaches a maximum height of about 2 feet tall. Hummingbirds love the abundance of nectar found in the small, red, trumpet shaped, blooms. A sun-loving shrub by the name of Summersweet is also a wonderful choice. It has a beautiful fragrance when it flowers in mid to late summer. This plant is very hearty once it has been established. This plant loves the sun and is very drought tolerant. A Cypress vine is an annual vine that might also be a nice addition to your garden or patio. This climbing vine produces seeds that allow the vine to return every year. The tiny red flowers produce plenty of nectar to keep the hummingbirds and butterflies in your area very happy! If you want to observe a science lesson and view the butterfly from it larval stage into adulthood, consider planting parsley, butterfly weed, passionflower, or an elm tree.
