I am thankful for the big row of Elaeagnus shrubs someone planted years ago that screens my backyard off from my great neighbors. The shrub has been home to many of friendly birds, bees and other fun wildlife. It serves as our home run wall during baseball games and has caught numerous overthrown footballs. I once had this mental reaction to Elaeagnus because they grow so fast and are super aggressive, reaching to any nearby trees and plants. I hated the idea of pruning, pruning and pruning them because they grow so fast. Planting the right plant in the right location really hits home with my Elaeagnus. I have only pruned these guys a half dozen times over the last 12 years and that was because they were in the way of our games. I would not be so thankful for Elaeagnus if they were planted under my house windows or hugging my sidewalk, no that would be the wrong location. They would be a constant reminder that I need to prune and take care of them. Too much attention for me, I like low maintenance. Once established they don’t require fertilizer or watering, so they meet the low maintenance requirement in those areas. Planted in the right place, Elaeagnus is a blessing and a plant I am thankful for. Planting to Grow, Jeff P.S. Are you looking for that perfect gift for Christmas?
