1. Remove any litter piled up around the base of my trunk. Although in theory leaves work well as compost, piles of leaves leftover from the fall may have an adverse effect on my trunk and actually start to suffocate me. Put leaves in a separate area to decompose and use for later.
2. Have a soil sample test performed this winter, so that you can see what I need to eat this spring. It is not expensive and it offers easy-to-follow steps for knowing what to do next. Your local county extension (click here to find your local county extension) service provides an easy and fast way to do this.
3. I'm preparing now to grow early next spring. Though it seems, I am not doing much right now, the dormant stage is a very important time in the life of a plant. I take up nutrients best in early spring. Once the soil has been tested, you can prepare my food. By the end of March I'll be ready to eat.
