Do you view a glass half empty of half full? Believe it or not, controlling the weeds in your lawn has a lot to do with how you look at your lawn. Most people look at their lawns and think, “What am I going to do about all of these weeds?” When perhaps the question you should be asking is, “How can I extend the beauty of my existing lawn?” Want to know the best way to choke out a weed? Smother it with more grass. Not only does having a thick, healthy, lawn look pleasing to the eye, but it is also discouraging and concealing the growth of weeds. Weeds cannot grow where they do not have the space to grow, or where they cannot receive adequate sunlight because of your overpowering lawn. How do you increase the spread of your lawn? By keeping your lawn consistently mowed, you are also decreasing the height of your weeds, which in turn, decreases the weed’s ability to spread seed throughout your lawn. Also, if you have bare patches in your lawn, spread additional grass seed in these areas, and cover with straw until the grass emerges. Your grass must also be watered frequently, preferably in the morning, to encourage growth. If you still feel that your weeds must be treated, they can be treated in a few ways. You can purchase what is called a pre-emergent weed control herbicide which should be applied before weeds appear. For weeds that have already been established in your lawn, you will need to apply what is called a post-emergent weed control. The last option that can be considered in weed elimination, is simply removing the weed manually with your hands or a garden tool. Yes, this is time consuming but it can also be effective. If you are searching for a post-emergent weed control, the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center suggests that you look for formulations of 2,4-D. Special care should be used, when using this type of herbicide especially on St. Augustine grass. However, special care should always be used when using any type of herbicide. You must be sure to always read and follow the label when treating your plants. Some household examples of the post-emergent weed controllers are: Bayer Advanced Southern Broadleaf, Ortho, Weed B Gon, or Spectracide Weed Stop. A few good examples of pre-emergent herbicides are: Greenlight Crabgrass Preventer, StaGreen Crabex, Scott’s Halts, Portrait, Atrazine and Crabgrass Preventer 2. The secret is all in how you look at it.
