Does your tree have bark missing around its base? Line trimmer, a.k.a. weed eaters and mowers can be rough on trees. Although it
might seem like "no big deal", this is a very big deal. The tree's nutrient system is located just under the bark of a tree. Once these important nutrient highways are destroyed (cut with line trimmers, skinned off with mowers) there is no way of repairing them. No, this is something that not even pruning paint will fix. Line trimmers peel or whack away the bark (the trees protective layer) exposing and removing the very delicate and fine vascular system of the tree. We call this "girdling" the tree. Your only
hope is that enough of the bark has remained in place, and will heal with time from the damage.
Here's the deal:
The tree will not die immediately. Most likely the tree will survive a short period of time on stored energy, and then die. This
short period of time could be anywhere from 1 month to a year or more. If you'd rather not be on constant surveillance of your
husband or lawn contractor while they have a weed eater in hand; you might want to consider the following remedy. Adding a ring of mulch around the base of the tree will deter damaging machines from getting too close to your tree trunks. It is that simple. This
little trick not only looks great but it saves your investment without having to say a word. Tree rings in the yard also add a pattern of unity and order as well as providing a nice contrast within the green lawn. The trees in The Grove have tree rings-they are the silent protectors of the trees.
